NEST BOX WEEK National Nest Box Week is run by the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) and aims to encourage everyone to put up nest boxes to help our breeding birds and other wildlife. The natural nest sites on which many of our bird species depend, such as holes in trees and buildings, are fast disappearing as gardens and woods are ‘tidied’ and old houses are repaired. This year everyone with access to a nest box is invited to join The Nest Box Challenge. The aim of the survey is to collect information about breeding birds in gardens and green spaces across the UK by inviting you to register your box and enter details of what you see here. If you have access to a nest box please sign up to this fun challenge because the feedback the BTO receives from the public really makes a difference. And if you haven't already invested in a bird box, maybe now's the time to look around for one, you don't have to spend a fortune, but it is important that we encourage the breeding of our birds. As the activity in our gardens is increasing try to get out as much as you can (or observe through the windows) and see if you can spot the changes in our birds song and behaviour as the mating season starts. 24.02.07 |
